This course is aimed at practitioners who work within the Children and Adults workforce as part of universal service or provide an early help service. As well as those who work within specialist services which sit under statutory intervention who wish to gain a better understanding of this topic.

Aims

The aim of this course is to gain a better understanding of the key principles of Mental Capacity and Deprivation of Liberty safeguards. This will enable practitioners to gain an understanding of this within their individual roles.

Objectives

By the end of the session the course participants will have been informed how:

To ensure you understand the basic provisions of MCA, including:
• The 5 statutory principles
• The two-stage test of capacity
• Legal standing of Powers of Attorney and Advance Decisions to Refuse Treatment
• When you must instruct an IMCA
• How to make a ‘best interests’ decision
• Restraint and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DOLs)
