Target Audience

This course is aimed at practitioners who work within the children’s workforce as part of universal service or provide an early help service. As well as those who work within specialist services which sit under statutory intervention who wish to gain an insight into harm reduction, distraction techniques and local services available to support young people with harming behaviour.

The aim of this course is to give you the skills and confidence to enable you to understand self-harm and the underlying reasons for it and be able to act sensitively and appropriately in supporting a child or young person to practice harm reduction.


By the end of the session the course participants will have been informed how:

  • Young people may self-harm
  • To understand trigger points for a self-harm incident
  • To identify signs and symptoms of a young person who may be self-harming
  • To be aware of how to carry out a brief intervention with a young person who has self-harmed
