Target audience

This course is aimed at practitioners who work within the children’s workforce as part of universal service or provide an early help service. As well as those who work within specialist services which sit under statutory intervention who wish to gain an understanding of what is 'childhood neglect'.


To provide staff with an understanding of Blackburn with Darwen, Blackpool’s and Lancashire’s newly launched Multi-agency Neglect Strategies and to ensure confidence when identifying neglect. The day will link each local authorities practice standards, screening & practice tools, models of practice and individual local authority neglect strategy.

Virtual Workshop Aim

• Demonstrate an understanding of the Multi-Agency Neglect Strategy in your agency
• Link the new practice standards, screening tools, new partnership model of practice and neglect strategy
• Explore key neglect messages from research and serious case reviews
• Identify and utilise tools for assessment and intervention
• Refine analytical skills, intuition, and observation skills to enter the child’s world
• Identify and assess parent’s capacity to change and sustain
• Use professional curiosity and defensible decision making to work more confidently with families and neglect
• Utilise tools to identify and assess neglect and the impact of neglect on adolescents

Pre-course reading and preparation

  • Read and become familiar with your local authority Neglect Strategy Prior to the workshop
  • For the warm-up exercise think about 3 things about yourself: Two things that are true about yourself; One you have made up

A range of exercises, case studies, video’s will be used during the day and delegates will be asked to think about recent neglect case/s so that these can be used in the afternoon in action learning sets.
